Mindset

Love What You Do

It's going to be difficult to do this job long term if you don't love it. If someone is only doing this for the money I am sure they can thrive but to truly reach optimal performance it is definiteily an advantage to have the passion that only someone who truly loves what they are doing can have. This attitude will pour through the camera and the clients will have an even better experience.

Think Like a Boss

Too many teachers still have that employee mindset. You are an independent contractor and as such, you have the privilege and responsibility of total control over your career.

I don’t have an opinion on the larger question of whether teachers should be classified as employees.

  • Don't treat ESL companies like they are your bosses.

  • Don't treat parents like bosses, do not work around their needs  and schedules instead of you own.

  • Don't expect the same protections and perks employees would  enjoy.

  • Pay Attention to Your Career Development

  • Try other companies. Vipkid tries other teachers right?

  • Do your Taxes

  • Plan for Retirement

Stop thinking of a new habit as something you have to do, but as something you are allowed to do.

Instead, you can simply think, “I’m allowing myself to do this. It’s a treat.”

And it is. A workout can be a lovely thing, where you feel your body moving, you push against the forces of gravity, you triumph despite the difficulty, you get fresh air and gorgeous nature and you are treating your body and being good to it. This is a rare treat.

Once you shift from “have to” to “allowed to”, you now feel good about the activity. It’s not a chore, but a treat. It’s not something you struggle through to get the benefit — it is the benefit.

Practice Gratitude

If you get a bad feedback be grateful. We can find gratitude for the opportunity to grow, even in the midst of pain. Be grateful that someone else in the world cares enough to tell us what they think of us.

With this precious day that you’ve been given as a gift … show up fully committed. Show up fully devoted to the people you care about. Show up with fierce love that is a gift to all those around you. Show up with full loving appreciation for those you’re connected to, and for the gift of this moment.
